Every year, millions around the country come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day a service to the community in honor of the life and work of one of the country’s foremost civil rights icons. In 2021, given the ongoing pandemic, the community service projects held on MLK Day will certainly look and feel a bit different—but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. There are still many worthwhile projects right near your The Victor apartment—and some that you can do right from home!—so you can safely give back to those in need.

One such cause is the Ronald McDonald House. Located less than five minutes from your The Victor apartment, the organization provides vital services for the families of children who are being treated for critical illnesses at area hospitals. The agency offers housing services—as many patients are treated in our area from out of town—as well as food and other necessities, and support programs and resources to help families navigate the challenges they’re facing. And much of the organization’s work depends on the contributions of volunteers.

One easy way to do that, right from the comfort of your The Victor apartment, is to put together a Family Welcome Bag. Volunteers are asked to contribute: travel-size shampoo and conditioner, travel-size toothpaste, a toothbrush, hand lotion, razor, fuzzy socks, chapstick, tissues, note pad and pen, and hand sanitizer. Handmade cards and notes are also encouraged! The organization is also in need of Snack Packs, including cheese or peanut butter crackers, granola bars, pretzels or popcorn, a small water battle and bite-sized candy. Volunteers can sign up for a time slot and then drop the goods off at the organization on their designated day.
